About the Speakers
Theo Ling, Baker & McKenzie
Theo Ling is an international partner in Baker &
McKenzie’s Toronto office and a leading member
of the firm’s Global Information Technology &
Communications Practice Group. His corporate/commercial
practice focuses on advising local and multinational
technology-based clients on issues relating to computer
and technology law, including telecommunications, Internet
and privacy law matters. Mr. Ling has extensive experience
advising on data protection issues relating to electronic
communications and providing strategic global privacy
compliance advice to multinational technology companies.
Mr. Ling is a frequent speaker and author on privacy
issues. He is a graduate of Queen’s University
and the London School of Economics.
Lisa Douglas, Baker & McKenzie
Lisa Douglas joined Baker & McKenzie in 1997, bringing
many years of experience as a legal research specialist.
Her practice is extremely varied with an emphasis on
Canadian regulatory compliance, global and cross border
businesses, including general contract law; records
management; financial services regulatory compliance;
anti-money laundering regulatory compliance; export
and import controls; government contracting and defence
procurement; lobbying and anti-corruptions laws; sales,
franchise and distribution agreements; and health sector
regulation, ethics and marketing practices. Ms. Douglas
also provides commercial litigation support, especially
in appellate case reviews. Ms. Douglas was admitted
to practice law in Ontario in 1993. She is a graduate
of the University of Toronto (LL.B., 1991; M.L.S., 1985)
and Queen’s University (B.A., 1983).
William Karam, Baker &
McKenzie
William Karam’s practice is primarily focused
on advising local and multinational corporate clients
on issues relating to privacy and security, telecommunications
and broadcasting, and, in particular, technology and
e-commerce. Prior to joining Baker & McKenzie, Mr.
Karam worked as a technology consultant and gained significant
practical experience relating to issues in software
programming, networking, outsourcing, and strategic
planning. Mr. Karam is a practicing member of the bar
in Ontario and will soon be called to the New York State
bar. On the scholarship program, Mr. Karam graduated
from the University of Ottawa (LL.B. and LL.M. Law &
Technology Candidate). He is fluent in English, French
and Spanish, and has a working knowledge of Japanese.
Jonathan D. Cocker, Baker
& McKenzie
Jonathan Cocker joined Baker & McKenzie in 1999
after having practiced with Management Board Secretariat,
Government of Ontario. His practice involves advising
and representing employers in the areas of labour law,
employment law, and related regulatory matters, including
privacy law. Mr. Cocker was admitted to practice law
in Ontario in 1998. Mr. Cocker is a graduate of Osgoode
Hall Law School (LL.B., 1996) and the University of
Western Ontario (B.A., 1993).
