2006 Top Privacy Policy in Canada

Awards for Transparency
Congratulations

Nymity Inc., Canada's leading privacy research firm, recognizes Equifax's achievement in providing consumers with clear and complete notice of its privacy policies and procedures with the 2006 Top Privacy Policies in Canada award.

"Equifax's privacy policy is one the best in Canada, and was top 3 in the Consumer Services category," said Terry McQuay, President of Nymity. Mr. McQuay continues: "Equifax is clearly a leader in privacy.  For example Equifax was the first company in Canada to provide a Privacy Fact Statement to help consumers understand the organization's personal information handling policies and practices."

Privacy Fact Statement is a privacy short notice that provides consumers with a quick list of privacy facts, similar to a nutrition label found on food products.

The 2006 Top Privacy Policies in Canada awards are calculated by using an objective measurement of Transparency.  Nymity defines Transparency as: "Clear, complete and readily available notice on an organization's privacy policies and practices."  One of the 63 criteria used in the assessment for the Awards was: "Does the organization have a definition section?" Definitions are important as a term like "third party" is used differently from one organization to the next.  Definitions is just one of the areas in which Equifax excelled.  Not only did Equifax define third party, they have several key definitions including: "personal information", "disclosure" and even "Chief Privacy Officer".

Equifax's privacy policy is based on the 10 privacy principles, a common and effective structure for privacy policies as many consumers have become familiar with the principles since the introduction of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act.
