On May 26th the four European Data Protection Associations, The German GDD, the French AFCDP, the Dutch NGFG and the Spanish APEP issued a press release from Bonn, Paris, The Hague and Madrid calling for the new EU Law to strengthen the role of Data Protection Officers in all member States of the EU.
This press release is an important acknowledgement for those of us who have long developed, implemented and operated privacy programs in companies and government entities around the world. It is not only important to have privacy and data protection principles (especially an accountability principle) and laws and regulations, but it is critical to identify an individual to create a program educate and assist in its implementation and hold those within the company accountable for compliance to that program.
Pascale Gelly, attorney and data protection expert from Paris, France helps us understand why now and why these four organizations are coming together to champion this effort on the eve of the new EU law.
