Interviews with Experts

Fran Maier
President
TRUSTe
July 2010

Subject: TRUSTe Seal Programs, Products and Services

TRUSTe was founded as a non-profit organization in 1997 by Lori Fena, then executive director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), Commerce Net, other eCommerce privacy pioneers. Back then, as now, privacy was an important consumer issue that had the potential to slow down the adoption of the internet, ecommerce and online communities. The company was structured as a non-profit as a way of bringing together companies and industry leaders to address emerging privacy standards. Sponsorships from Microsoft, IBM, Commerce Net and several other companies helped launch TRUSTe but for most of its life as a non-profit it stayed afloat through companies purchasing the certification.
