What is a Works Council?

A works council is a body, within a corporation, whose members are elected by employees and who operates as "the ear and the voice" of employees. In most EU countries, the corporation - the employer- must provide information to the works council on various topics such as its activities, its finances, its employment and compensation policies and statistics and its development and restructuring plans, so that the works council is properly informed of the directions the company is taking and can comment on them to make sure that the interests of employees are taken into consideration.

Other topics of interest in this interview include:

  • Differences between a labor union and a Works Council
  • The purposes and powers of the Works Council
  • Multi-national companies implementing a new global IT tool
  • The necessity of a pan-European Works Council for companies
