Smart Grid Privacy Concerns in United States October 2009
Rebecca Herold, CISSP, CIPP, CISA, CISM, FLMI Author, Instructor, and Independent Information Privacy, Security and Compliance Consultant Rebecca Herold Inc. |
As you recently completed one of the first ‘Smart Grid’ privacy impact assessments, please explain what is a Smart Grid?
Yes, from what the utilities folks participating in the NIST Smart Grid privacy group tell me, this was the first PIA performed on the Smart Grid! We have a great NARUC contact in the group, and he is going to check to see what, if any, type of privacy research the state level utilities commissions have done. There have been a few papers written about privacy concerns of smart grids in the past year, but none were of the structure or perspective of the PIA I led for the NIST Smart Grid privacy group.
Other topics of interest in this interview include:
- Possible Smart Grid data items collected
- The purposes and uses for the data collected
- Potential for identity theft, home invasions, and other illegal activities
- Laws and regulations governing utilities’ use of personal information
