Biometric Encryption
June 2007

Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Ph.D.
Information and Privacy
Commissioner of Ontario

What is Biometric Encryption?

Biometric Encryption (“BE”) is a class of technology that allows you to use your biometric to generate or to encrypt a PIN, a password, or any alphanumeric string, that you may use for potentially numerous applications – to gain access to computers, to enter buildings, and to privately and securely prove identity. The PINs can be hundreds of bits in length – the length doesn’t matter because you don’t need to remember it!

Other topics of interest in this interview include:

  • Privacy issues associated with the use of biometrics
  • Non-technical description of how Biometric Encryption works
  • Biometric Encryption deployment in employee situations
  • Benefits of biometrics in private sector customer related applications
